World Carfree Network - ICC

Present: (names here)

Announcements:

  • Randy: We are now officially registered as World Carfree Network Europe! The statutues were approved by the Ministry of the Interior (CZ) and returned to us on Oct. 5 with the official stamps. We also heard from Arie that World Carfree Network USA is now official and has nonprofit status. Randy will separate the member orgs and projects on the website into three categories: Europe, USA, International.
  • Randy: We got a Skype chat message (Oct. 6) saying that the EVS application of Bas Ruyters was approved by the Belgian national agency of the European Commission YOUTH programme. Now we're just waiting for approval by the Czech national agency.

Agenda items:

  • Randy: Mobycon 'Carfree Communities' proposal: The Dutch consulting firm Mobycon is leading an Intelligent Energy Europe funding application and hopeful project involving several partners across Europe, including Autofrei Leben (Markus Heller) and Carfree UK. The total budget of the project is 700,000 EUR with half of that (350,000 EUR) requested from the grant. The project description: "To promote the development of carfree communities as a means for sustainable energy use, using multilayer mapping to identify potential locations for carfree development and to create a European manual for setting up a carfree community." Our specific role as written in the application is to coordinate 'Work Package 5', which is estimated to consist of 10 'person-months' of work spread over two years. The scope of work package 5: "To disseminate the results of the project and to develop supporting material for advocating carfree communities in order to convince politicians, developers etc. to (at least) investigate the possible realisation of a carfree community in their region. This material will be made available in the 10 main European languages of Europe." This could overlap of course with materials produced for the Visegrad project. Randy is interested in filling this role (starting April in the UK) if the grant is received. It would also be possible to subcontract specific roles if necessary. None of this is a budget issue because the funding would come from the grant. It's also a way for Randy to be able to afford living in the UK. He is also willing to submit the necessary info and documents requested by Mobycon in the coming weeks. He thinks this project is exactly what we should be focused on and is very happy that Mobycon (which has the status and profile to carry off such a large project) is coordinating it and has requested our involvement. He also thinks that being part of a larger grant project like this could open up doors for us in the future, which is especially valuable since youth funding for us is rather limited. What do people think?
