WARNING! / ABOUT THIS BULLETIN

In an attempt to wean Car Busters away from dependency on such funders as the European Union - whose agenda, needless to say, we don't share - throughout this bulletin you will be exposed to all manner of gratuitous, pathetic attempts to get you to give your hard- earned money to our organization. (The nerve of them!) You'll also be exposed to the neo-colonialist imperialism of American English (gasp!), rather than the usual British English (shock, horror!), in remembrance of the lives - yes, even those of the CEOs - lost in last month's attack on the U.S. (Next month's bulletin may feature an obscure dialect known as Afghani English, in remembrance of the expected loss of life there, assuming Bush's plans go ahead - but we won't depress you any more about that for now…)

The monthly bulletin, mind you, bears no relation (well, maybe a little) to Car Busters magazine, which is something completely different and entirely superior, being in print form what with 32 pages, a color cover and all. Both are wholesome, family publications - that is, aside from the disclaimer at the end of this month's bulletin and the one solitary reference to Hades.

If all the items in this bulletin are from Car Busters rather than from other groups, don't blame us: Submissions to the bulletin are accepted by the 25th of each month to info@carbusters.org, with "Bulletin Submission" as the preferred subject headline (but really any subject line will do, apart from "Get Stuffed"). The bulletin is translated into French and Esperanto versions, and oh how we pity the translators stuck with that job THIS month. Anyone seriously up for starting another language version, just let us know (German or Spanish would be great…).

WORLD CAR-FREE DAY WRAP-UP

To be honest, we don't know what the hell happened! (There it was - that was it - the one single reference to Hades which will not be repeated, and which we warned you about…) First, as you know, we put out this call to action for World Car-Free Day, and Adbusters promoted it as well. Then all sorts of people from such unexpected places as Uzbekistan were contacting us before the event, getting materials from us and making plans. But then, as luck would have it, the U.S. gets bombed a week and a half before the event, and, we imagine, attention understandably shifted elsewhere. At least that might explain why we haven't received very many post-event reports. Don't worry, we'll find out what happened and report it in Car Busters mag. 13 (the unlucky issue?), rather than here. Same goes for the European car-free day.

In any case, in Prague we had a fetching Critical Mass of record size (100 people) and record enthusiasm. We also organized, with the Center for Transport and Energy, a week-long public exhibition on the negatives of car dependence and the benefits of car-free life/urban design, held on one of the public squares in the city center. As for next year, there are strong indications from the experience of the Buy Nothing Day campaign that an event has more potential to really "take off" if it's attached to a significant calendar date. This happened to Buy Nothing Day when it was moved to North America's biggest shopping day of the year, just after U.S. Thanksgiving. Perhaps World Car-Free Day could be held on the date of the world's first automobile fatality, or the date that the Ford Model T was released, which led to mass motorization. Please send us your thoughts and ideas…

"ROADKILL BILL" BOOK COMING SOON

Following closely on the heels of "CARtoons" by Andy Singer (May 2001), Car Busters will be releasing its second book in October, "Roadkill Bill" by Ken Avidor. Roadkill Bill is "a comic strip on cars, technology and philosophy from the viewpoint of a frequently squashed rodent." You may have already seen some of the strips in Car Busters magazine (that is, if you've been paying attention), on the web site http://www.roadkillbill.com, or if you're from Minneapolis, every week in Pulse of the Twin Cities. But the book will collect these strips together for the first time (complete with a groovy full-color cover, which you'll soon be able to view at http://www.carbusters.org. Could you think of a more appropriate Christmas/Chanukah/Solstice/Kwanzaa/whatever gift for your car-free comrades?

The list price will be US$10, CN$15, 6.50 GBP, AU$18, 20 DM, and 23 NLG. That price will include shipping, when ordered from Car Busters or http://www.roadkillbill.com. Groups/organizations can get bulk orders for US$6 each. In Eastern Europe or the so-called "Third World," it's US$4 for groups or individuals. The sooner you order, the more you'll help us to pay the printer's bill. Like NOW would be just fine.

"CAR-TOONS" SECOND PRINT RUN (ALSO COMING SOON)

At the same time as the first print run of "Roadkill Bill," "CARtoons" by Andy Singer will go into a second print run. This time it will be distributed to bookstores by A.K. Press (U.S.), Marginal Distribution (Canada), Green Books (U.K.), and Car Busters (Australia and elsewhere). It will have a higher list price (US$10, CN$15, 6.50 GBP, AU$18, 20 DM, 23 NLG - same as "Roadkill Bill") to allow us to actually make some money this time (since retailers, distributors and printers combined take 2/3 of the retail cost). If you want a book at US$6 (including shipping), then order now from http://www.andysinger.com or http://www.carbusters.org, before the first print run runs out (by the end of 2001). Afterwards we'll sell them at US$10 (inc. shipping) from the above two sources. Same goes for bulk orders for groups: at US$4 while supplies last, and thereafter contact us to find out the current discount prices. Eastern Europe/Third World rate: US$4, for groups or individuals. There. So now you know.

SUBMISSIONS FOR CAR BUSTERS MAG. 13

The official submission deadline for issue 13 of Car Busters magazine (again, not to be confused with this bulletin) was September 30, being a few days ago. Just to be nice, we'll give you 'til October 10. You can send articles, letters, artwork, book reviews, whatever. We're doing a retrospective feature on "The British Road Protest Movement: Five Years Later," so we'd especially like to hear from British activists on why the protests have dried up, despite an ongoing British road-building program. (If you e-mail us with your perspective, please give us your phone number, so we can call you for a short interview.)

GRAPHICS BOOK TO BE UPDATED, DIGITALIZED

Yes, that's right. You heard it here first. The Car Busters Graphics Book, put together by Wlad Quenu in 1999, will be updated and expanded. It will be made available in print form with an optional accompanying CD- ROM of TIF files. We may even put a low-resolution version on our web site, so that people can request specific graphics. Feel free to submit any graphics to us for consideration, preferably as 72-dpi JPEG or GIF files, or paper originals. (If we decide to include your graphic in the Graphics Book, we'll ask for a higher-resolution version later.) Basically we're looking for high-quality transportation-themed graphics that can be made available for free reuse by activists and campaigners around the world, for their fliers, posters, newsletters and other graphic materials. Please send them as e-mail attachments to info@carbusters.org with the subject headline "Graphics Book Submission."

WEB SITE IMPROVED (THANKS, PETR!)

Some major energy has recently gone into the Car Busters web site (http://www.carbusters.org), thanks mostly to Petr Kurfurst (no, it's NOT supposed to be 'Peter' - the Czech language likes to conserve its vowels for when they're really needed, which is not very often). We'll be continuing to expand the site throughout the coming months, with:

- a system for credit card ordering of resources, subscriptions and memberships directly from the web site (complete with the ubiquitous virtual "shopping basket" - okay, on second thought, maybe not THAT…)

- an expanded list of links to other sites/organizations (which YOU can help us with by giving us suggestions for relevant links to add, and by linking your site to ours)

- an expanded offering of "Freesources" - resources such as articles, reports and graphics, all available free via download

- a 'Get Involved' page that, as the title implies, offers various ways to participate in Car Busters projects (and others), and lists our job openings (which for some reason we've always been quite quiet about…)

- and if we're lucky, we'll finally obtain the domain name carbusters.org, which we've been wading through bureaucracy to obtain for about a year now…

MEDIEVAL URBAN DESIGN IN MOROCCO TRIP: JANUARY 1-7, 2002

Some Car Busters staff and others will be visiting Morocco in December and January, and from January 1-7 we invite you to join us in a fact- finding mission to Fes el-Bali, the world's largest car-free city, which dates to the 700s AD and remains very much a living city of 200,000 inhabitants today. We will be continuing ongoing documentation on how Fes' medieval, hypomobile urban design contributes to its viability as a car-free city, with neither public transportation nor cycling. (All trips are by foot, with transport of goods via donkey.) We will be photographing, reasearching, interviewing and touring. This will be reported upon in Car Busters mag. 14, which will have a medieval urban design theme. Photographers, videographers, French speakers and Moroccan Arabic speakers are especially needed. For liability reasons, this is not an official Car Busters trip, and no travel reimbursement, etc., is available. You are however welcome to join us at your own expense, or to fundraise for yourself. Contact rghent@gmx.net if you're interested in coming, and we'll send you information as plans materialize.

PRAGUE CRITICAL MASS!

Since April, Prague bike activists have gathered together every month (on the third Thursday of the month, 5 pm, Jiriho z Podebrad) for a mobile celebration of cycling in this city which, well, leaves a lot to be desired on the cycling infrastructure front. Attendance has ranged from 12 to 100, averaging 40 to 50. We'd say it was gaining momentum, but then again, winter is coming on, so we'll see what happens… More info (mostly in Czech) is available on the unofficial Prague Critical Mass web site: http://www.cyklojizdy.ecn.cz/praha/.

BALKAN UNITY BIKE TOUR WRAP-UP

From July 27 to September 2, over 50 people cycled from Timisoara, western Romania to Sinemorets, on the Bulgarian Black Sea coast, where the annual Ecotopia gathering took place. The cyclists passed through three countries (Romania, Yugoslavia, Bulgaria) on the way there, met local environmental organizations and participated in actions together in the main cities on the way. The bike tour had three main aims: support local environmental organizations in their campaigns, promote sustainable transportation, and form a network of individuals and organizations working on these issues. Apart from the interesting actions in Belgrade, Sofia and conferences held in almost all the big cities on the way, the bike tour participants developed good relationships with the local people, getting free coffee and ajvar (great Serbian food) along the way. For more information on the Balkan Unity Ride, see the web site http://www.come.to/bur2001. The Balkan Unity Ride was this year's name/theme for the annual Ecotopia Bike Tour, which has been held the past 11 years. For info on the annual Ecotopia environmental gathering, see http://www.eyfa.org.

NEW CARBUSTERS STAFF / JOB OPENINGS

As the summer comes to a close and life returns to normal (somewhat normal anyway, at least for now) we find our one-room office suddenly filled with seven staffers. That's right, Car Busters has become a sweltering sweatshop. (We might show you a photo of this in Car Busters mag. 13.) We are now Ivana Jakubkova (Czech Rep.), Petr Kurfurst (Czech Rep.), Randy Ghent (U.S., author of this bulletin), Joe Dodds (England), Kerasia Michalopoulou (Greece, as you might have guessed), as well as two people who may or may not be from Romania, who shall remain anonymous for immigration reasons. They are lovely people though, whoever they are. I'm sure you'd like them, too. Richard Lane (England) and two more individuals unknown at this time (perhaps you) will be joining us in February, when Kerasia and the anonymous will have departed (bless their souls).

So we're looking for a couple of Europeans under 26 (funder's requirements) who have at least some of the following attributes: strong English writing, editing and communication skills, a sense of humor, publication layout skills, web design ability, an activist perspective, campaigning experience, self-direction/motivation, attention to detail, extensive knowledge of transportation issues, fundraising experience, creativity, and a desire to pull these all together to stir things up at the international level. Pay is at a level appropriate for the Czech Republic, considering the local cost of living, etc. Technically it is not a "job," but a "volunteer exchange." (In other words, you will not get rich, but you'll have fun and learn a lot hopefully.) Contact us and we'll send you more info. Application deadline: December 1, 2001.

ERRATA: DETOUR CORRECTION

In Car Busters magazine no. 12, on the Resources pages, the web address for Detour Publications was incorrect. It should be www.detourpublications.com, not .org. Detour sells over 150 books and resources on transportation and urban ecology through its web site, offering a 10% discount for Car Busters members and subscribers. (If you're only on our e-mail bulletin list, that's NOT enough to get the discount - but we still love you anyway, really we do.) It is also possible to get a Car Busters subscription from Detour via credit card (or U.S./Canadian check, etc.), which is especially convenient for Canadians, as we don't accept Canadian checks ourselves ('cause our U.S. bank thinks they're poo).*

DISCLAIMER

* Excuse us for using the word "poo" in a wholesome, family publication such as this. It was admitedly a crude and juvenile attempt to create material for this disclaimer. Don't know what came over us. Won't happen again, promise. Nor will we ever use the infinitely more juvenile "poo poo"…

AVERTISSEMENT !

SITE WEB AMELIORE (MERCI PETR !)

- un systeme de paiement par carte de crédit pour les commandes de livres et autres ressources, pour les abonnements et les cotisations (avec, comme il se doit, le panier a provision virtuel - bon, d'accord, tout compte fait, peut-etre pas CA);

- une liste étendue de liens vers d'autres site (vous pouvez nous aider pour ça en nous faisant des suggestions de liens intéressants et en reliant votre site au nôtre);

- une offre plus importante de "Freesources" - ressources telles que articles, rapports et dessins, télédéchargeables gratuitement;

- une page "Get involved" [Engagez-vous, impliquez-vous] qui, comme son nom l'indique, propose différentes manieres de participer aux projets de Car Busters (et d'autres), et donne la liste de nos postes a pourvoir (sur lesquels nous sommes toujours restés tout-a-fait muets);

Bon, on verra bien.

ATENTU!/ PRI TIU CXI BULTENO

"ROADKILL BILL" LIBRO TUJ ALVENONTA

La prezolisto estos US$10, CN$15, 6.50 GBP, AU$18, 20 DM, and 23 NLG. Grupoj/organizoj povas kolektive mendi po US$ 6.

Orienteuxropa/Triamonda kosto: US$4, por grupoj aux unuopuloj. Jen. Nun vi scias cxion.

GRAFIKLIBRO GXISDATIGOTA, ENKOMPUTILIGOTA

Jes, gxuste.

RETEJO PLIBONIGITA (DANKON, PETR!)

RAPORTO PRI BALKAN UNITY BIKE TOUR

NOVA AUXTOFRAKASISTA STABO/LABORPOSTENOJ

Ekzakte, Auxtofrakasistoj igxis premsxvitiga sauxno.

AVERTO
