Towards Carfree Cities IX - Accommodation
Given York's popularity, hotels, B&Bs and hostels can fill up quickly. We cannot emphasise enough that it's important to book your accommodation as soon as possible.
Hotels
Visit York, York's tourist agency, has created an accommodation booking page specifically for the conference, from which you can get discounted rates at a selection of hotels (to be expanded as needed). View the Visit York TCC IX Conference Accommodation page here. The hotels listed are within the city walls, just a short walk from the conference venue.
Hostels and Budget Options
The newly refurbished 126-bed Ace Hotel will probably be your best choice. It is located just around the corner from the conference venue. Ace Hotel offers a weekly discount, as well as a group discount for bookings of 10 people or more. Feel free to use our Facebook group to try to co-ordinate group bookings. Again, you'll want to book right away to avoid disappointment.
The only other hostel in York is the YHA Hostel. It is a large Victorian house in spacious grounds, with 147 beds. It is quite a walk to get there (about 30 minutes), although along a pleasant riverside walking/cycling path. Due to the distance it is best suited for those with bicycles.
We will also be organising home stays, so that some of our participants can be guests of York residents who are supportive of the conference. If you'd like to request a home stay, please do so at least one month before the conference. We will also be seeking free accommodation for those coming with sleeping bags/mattresses. Stay tuned for details on both of these.
For those with bicycles interested in camping, you might try York Caravan Park, two miles from the centre of town. Somewhat further out is York Marine, which runs a small campsite just south of York at Bishopthorpe.
Bed & Breakfasts/Guest Houses
Unlike the hotel options that we've listed, the B&Bs near the conference venue are located outside the city walls. The closest one (yet not exactly a B&B) is The Bar Convent, a unique place to stay just around the corner from the Priory Street Centre and close to the railway station. It's on a busy road, but still worth considering:
The Bar Convent
17-19 Blossom Street, YO24 1AQ; 01904 643238

At the more expensive end of the scale, in a different area there is a B&B on a carfree riverside path, a pleasant walk from the city centre:
Abbey Guest House
13-14 Earlsborough Terrace, YO30 7BQ; tel: 01904 627782
