Towards Carfree Cities IX - Accommodation
Given York's popularity, hotels, B&Bs and hostels can fill up quickly. We cannot emphasise enough that it's important to book your accommodation as soon as possible.
Hotels
The hotel booking site specific to the conference has now closed. If you're interested in a hotel (as opposed to a hostel or B&B), please contact Visit York. They can help you to book a hotel near the conference venue. Two hotels to try are the Queens Hotel on Skeldergate and the Ramada Encore on Micklegate. These can also be booked online from various hotel booking sites such as Laterooms.com. Also see The Bar Convent listed below under B&Bs.
Hostels and Budget Options
The newly refurbished 126-bed Ace Hotel (photo right) will probably be your first choice. It is located just around the corner from the conference venue. Ace Hotel offers a weekly discount. As of 30 March there are only a few spaces left at this hostel, and requiring a mid-week room switch from a 14-bed dorm to a 6-bed dorm.
The other hostel option is the YHA Hostel. It is a large Victorian house in spacious grounds, with 147 beds. It is a bit of a walk to get there from the conference venue (about 30 minutes), although along a pleasant and flat riverside walking/cycling path. It is also served by the First York Number 2 bus route.
We have been organising free homestay accommodation, but as of 7 June there are no longer places available. Also full is our free accommodation in a church hall for those coming with sleeping bags/mattresses (mainly Ecotopia Biketour participants).
For those with bicycles interested in camping, Naburn Station can definitely accommodate you five miles south of York, on the Sustrans Route 65 cycle track.
Bed & Breakfasts/Guest Houses
Unlike the hotel options that we've listed, the B&Bs near the conference venue are located outside the city walls. The closest one (although not exactly a B&B) is The Bar Convent, a unique place to stay just around the corner from the Priory Street Centre and close to the railway station. It's on a busy road, but still worth considering:
The Bar Convent
17-19 Blossom Street, YO24 1AQ; 01904 643238

There is also a cluster of B&Bs about a 10-minute walk from the conference venue. These include:

At the more expensive end of the scale, in a different area there is a B&B on a carfree riverside path, a pleasant walk from the city centre:
Abbey Guest House
13-14 Earlsborough Terrace, YO30 7BQ; tel: 01904 627782
